N.A.C.A ORPHANAGE PROJECT (English)

Nowadays Cambodia lives a serious child overpopulation problem (the average is 5/6 children per married couple) in addition to a difficult fight against poverty (infant mortality is up to 7, 3%), because the authorities are not investing in social projects regarding sexual education or in conditioning their minds towards the condom use. Moreover, the Government has become totally indifferent to the current situation and they show no interest in trying to find a solution to this problem. Therefore, parents find themselves in the position that have to abandon their children in orphanages until they are old enough to have full rights as a citizen, or sell them in order to get something in exchange to survive.

The 30% of Cambodia’s population has a lack of Basic School Education and only the 35% has finished Higher School. Education in Cambodia is not free and, of course, there is no infrastructure to welcome all the children of the country.
Education rates are:

*Basic/Primary Education: 500 riels per child a day (0.13US dollar)
*Secondary Education: 1.500 riels per child a day (0.38US dollar)
*High School Education: 4.000 riels per child a day (1US dollar)

In 1999, Mrs. and Mr. Savang created the N.A.C.A. orphanage (National Action Culture Association) and two years later, in 2001, they opened their home place to everybody with the objective of taking in children that families had no means of support. Today, the Cambodian couple have 27 children living there between the ages of 6 and 17 years old and, luckily, they can enjoy of a place to eat, sleep and receive a basic education.

N.A.C.A.’s orphanage, apart from providing a roof, food and cloths to these children, concentrate all the efforts on teaching the English language (lessons given by foreign volunteers and Sous Namee, Cambodian volunteer), because they truly believe will be very helpful for their future. Traditional and contemporary dance and Cambodian music are very important subjects, too. I would like to mention thirteen children of the group are studying Primary School, three in the morning and ten in the afternoon.

However, due to a high number of foster children the orphanage has problems to afford all the expenses (medicines, food, cloths…) and moreover there is a big lack of space (there is a need of 20.000US dollars to buy a new plot).
